What Makes Your Heart Sing?

By: Caitriona Reed

Several years ago I had taken a few days off after a long stretch of work. I was very tired and was watching an afternoon television program. This is something I rarely do, but it was relaxing. A woman was on the program making jewelry. She absolutely enjoyed this process so much that she’d developed it into a business and she said, "This is my absolute passion."

She said, "It makes my heart sing."

I sat there in that moment as I was watching her delight. She had created a jewelry business that made her heart sing. I felt a great deal of sadness because at the time I wasn’t sure what made my heart sing. I knew what I enjoyed, but I’d never felt the way the woman on the television program had. At that moment, I began on an endeavor to find out what could make my heart sing.

I have found that what makes my heart sing and leads me to own bliss is filling in blanks in my life that I haven’t really looked at before. My focus had been so much on spiritual practice and social justice that I had created diversions in my own thinking and my own actions.

For example, I thought people who made money were evil. I thought the world was a place where social injustice was rife. That was simply the lens I had chosen.

My bliss is going deeper into what makes the mind work. Not only my mind, because there is a collective mind. The world is not as mechanical and solid as we often think.

Many people imagine that the only ways to make your heart sing are very heavy and fairly abstract. I would invite you to ask yourself, "What makes my heart sing?" every day. Include things that are very immediate, sensory, transient, and personal.

Here are examples of the kinds of things that might make your heart sing, nothing is too small or concrete to include:

* To eat a mango with the juice running down your face.
* To take the dogs for a walk
* To look outside as the first twilight turns into the color of the light of dawn.

Remember to touch these things in the day that make your heart sing. These are things that bring joy, a sense of enlightenment, embodiment, physicality, and presence.

Remember to revisit these questions daily:

* What makes your heart sing?
* What do you love?
* What brings you joy?
* What makes you feel attuned and congruent in your life?
* What allows you to maintain a focus that takes you forward in joy?
